Backstory Overview
“Astarion prowled the night as a vampire spawn for centuries, serving a sadistic master until a mind flayer parasite freed him from his bonds. Now that he can walk in daylight the game is on, for only his old master stands in the way of him becoming the greatest vampire the world has ever known.”Personality
* Astarion will perform good deeds if it is funny enough for his sense of humor -- "Are you agreeing to commit murder for someone you barely know? Count me in."
* Astarion values personal loyalty due to his circumstances.
* He is primarily concerned with his personal survival, self-interest and ensured freedom against Cazador.
* The Tadpole nullified his Vampiric Banes (Running Water, Invitation indoors and damage from the Sun) and also broke the Mind control that Cazador held on him. Thus he is extremely attached to it and wants to continue to use the Tadpole's powers.
* He hates playing as a hero -- no "hero" ever came to help him when he was tormented by Cazador for 200 years so he's quite bitter toward the idea of heroes as a whole. CHOOSING NOT TO ASCEND .
Doing the "right" thing comes with a price . . .
Amongst his travels and adventures, Astarion eventually confronts Cazador, the man who turned him into a vampire spawn. The confrontation comes with a difficult choice: ascend, become a full fledged vampire free of hunger and Cazador's influence but at the cost of the lives of all of Cazador's other vampire spawns OR spare the lives of his fellow spawns and not ascend.Anxiously he debates his option and he gets his freedom. . . In a different way. Astarion kills Cazador. His sire can't control him or torture him in death. The con of this action is this means he'll forever be a vampire spawn prone to bouts of hunger and he will always be weaker than a full fledged vampire. Shortly after his sire's death he helps free all of Cazador's spawns, saving over 7,000 people by doing so. Maybe all this time he didn't need a hero... He was the hero all along. And maybe, just maybe, being a "hero" isn't so bad after all.
